Harma liked to joke her family were one-time Reaver slaves made good, but everyone knew they were solidly middle-class all the way, having come North to find new territories for their book-keeping and accountancy skills. Harma had invited Vika into her parents’ home once, which was a nice thought. The furniture had all been tropical hardwood, which made Vika anxious – it would have been hard for anyone to break a leg off, use it as a weapon, but not impossible – and there hadn’t been much protest from the family when she’d left after an hour. She hadn’t really expected any, but had always thought kindly of Harma for making the offer in the first place.
